How the folders of the AIS Charts API are arranged. The AIP coverages follow the structure of the AIP in PANS-AIM (Appendix 2, Contents of the AIP) and Doc 8126; the other sources keep a simpler coverage / version / folder layout.

{root directory}/{coverage}/…

The root directories and coverage folders are listed in API Usage and Coverage Match List.

AIP coverages

Root directory aip-charts. The geolocation root directories follow the same layout (Geo Server › Chart Geolocation).

The hierarchy is planned to follow the AIP structure of PANS-AIM and, at the same time, to take in the non-standard practices of the various States (section numbers, section titles, extra parts, publication habits).

The AIP and its folders

Folder AIP content
Part 1 - General (GEN) Part 1, GEN
Part 2 - En-route (ENR) Part 2, ENR (ENR 6 en-route charts included)
Part 3 - Aerodromes (AD0-AD1) Part 3, AD 0 and AD 1
Charts - AD2 Aerodromes/{aerodrome} AD 2 of one aerodrome: its text and charts
Charts - AD3 Heliports/{heliport} AD 3 of one heliport: its text and charts
Obstacle Data Sets/ Electronic obstacle data sets (Area 1 in En-route/, Areas 2–4 per aerodrome), where published
Other Documents/ AIRAC content that cannot be placed in the folders above

A section folder exists only when the source has content for it; depending on the source, some section folders of a cycle can be missing.

For the standard AIP sections (GEN 0–4, ENR 0–6, AD 0–3, AD 2.1–2.24, AD 3.1–3.23), see PANS-AIM, Appendix 2 (Contents of the AIP).

Section names and numbers are those of the source, not of PANS-AIM. Files keep the section numbers and titles the publishing State uses; where a State departs from the standard numbering or titles, the files follow the State.

Non-standard parts: some States have main sections outside the standard, such as an AD 4. Depending on the producer of the coverage, such content is distributed to the AD 2 / AD 3 folders of the aerodromes it concerns; where distributing is impractical, it goes to Other Documents/. Take care with the coverages of these States: an expected document may sit in another folder than in the standard.

Aerodrome / heliport folders

  • Folder name: starts with the aerodrome identifier: its ICAO location indicator, or an AIXM identifier of up to 6 characters when it has none (LT1401). Ibosoft coverages add IATA code, city and name (LTAC - ESB - ANKARA - Esenboğa); PAMS coverages use the identifier only (LTAC).
  • File name: {identifier} - {chart type} - {title}, e.g. LTAC - ADC - Aerodrome Chart. The chart type part (ADC, SID, STAR, IAC …) is matched by the chartLabels of get-shared-config.

AIRAC cycle folders

Information that changes on AIRAC dates (PANS-AIM; Doc 8126) is grouped by cycle; each cycle folder holds the complete AIP valid from that date.

Source Folder name Example
Ibosoft coverages {YYNN} - Eff {DD-MMM-YYYY} (YYNN = AIRAC year and cycle number) 2610 - Eff 01-OCT-2026
PAMS coverages WEF {DD-MMM-YY} WEF 01-OCT-26
Archive 0000 - Older Archives older loose files

Sort by effective date, not by name: WEF names do not sort in date order. Older cycles of a coverage may use earlier folder names (e.g. AD2 Aerodromes/ instead of Charts - AD2 Aerodromes/); the section patterns in get-shared-config (aip.sectionPatterns) recognise both.

Non-AIRAC folders

Folder Content
Aeronautical Information Circulars (AIC) AIC
AIP Amendments (AMDT) AIP amendments: AIRAC and non-AIRAC AMDT
AIP Supplements (SUP) AIP supplements: AIRAC and non-AIRAC SUP
Other Documents Other publications of the AIS

AIRAC AMDT and AIRAC SUP are also placed here, not in the AIRAC cycle folders: several States publish AIRAC and non-AIRAC amendments and supplements in the same way, so the two cannot always be told apart.

Folder names may carry the date of the last update (AIP Supplements (SUP) - Last Uptd 02-OCT-2026); recognise them by their beginning (aip.nonAiracPatterns: AIC, AMDT, SUP). Some coverages have additional folders.

Other coverages

Root directory other-charts. The geolocation root directories follow the same layout (Geo Server › Chart Geolocation). There is no AIP structure here; each source keeps its own folders below a version level.

other-charts/
└── {coverage}/ e.g. US-TPP-…, FLIP-CENOR-…
    └── {version}/ e.g. 2610 - (WEF 01-OCT-2026 TIL 29-OCT-2026)
        └── {section / aerodrome}/ e.g. KJFK - JFK - JOHN F KENNEDY INTL
            └── [{subfolders}/] optional, any depth
                └── {file}

Version folders

Folder name Meaning Example
{YYNN} - (WEF {date} TIL {date}) Cycle with validity period 2610 - (WEF 01-OCT-2026 TIL 29-OCT-2026)
WEF {date} TIL {date} Edition with validity period WEF 03-SEP-2026 TIL 29-OCT-2026
(Next) … Next edition, not yet in force (Next) 2611 - (WEF 29-OCT-2026 TIL 26-NOV-2026)
Non-AIRAC Content without a validity period Non-AIRAC

The current version is the latest one whose validity has started; skip (Next) versions unless you want the coming edition.

Section / aerodrome folders

The first folder below the version depends on the source:

Source First folder level Example
FAA TPP Aerodrome: {ICAO} - {FAA id} - {name} (ICAO part empty when there is none) KJFK - JFK - JOHN F KENNEDY INTL, - 00R - LIVINGSTON MUNI
FAA VFR / IFR charts Chart series Sectional Chart, Enroute Low Altitude (U.S.)
Military FLIP Aerodrome or document EBBE - BEAUVECHAIN
VFR manuals Aerodrome (with effective date) - Balatonlelle Airport (WEF 01-OCT-2026)
Other / general Aerodrome, identifier or topic VQPR - Paro Intl, LT1401

Below it, further subfolders may follow (e.g. historical chart sets); list them with get-directory-index or read all files at once with get-file-index. File names are the chart or document titles (APD - AIRPORT DIAGRAM, AERODROME CHART).
