World area forecast system (WAFS) gridded forecasts rendered as PNG images: turbulence (EDR), icing severity, wind speed and cumulonimbus. Two cycles per day, forecasts from +6 to +36 hours, the last 7 days kept.

The gridded forecasts are those of the world area forecast system (Annex 3, Chapter 3; PANS-MET Appendix 5). Images are global, in equirectangular projection (EPSG:4326), ready to be placed as an image layer on a map.

Endpoints

Endpoint Description
GET /wafc-other/available Current cycle and the stored cycles with their offsets and parameters
GET /wafc-other/image/{param} One PNG image for a cycle and forecast offset (image/png)

Parameters

Parameter Endpoints Description
param /image/{param} Parameter and level code (see below)
offset /image (required) Forecast offset in hours: 06, 09, 12 … 36 (3-hour steps)
cycle /image Cycle YYYYMMDD_HH (HH = 00 or 12); omit for the current cycle

Parameter codes

Group Codes (pressure level hPa → flight level)
Turbulence (EDR) 148_edr (FL450), 197_edr (FL390), 250_edr (FL340), 301_edr (FL300), 344_edr (FL270), 393_edr (FL240), 506_edr (FL180), 595_edr (FL140)
Icing severity 301_icsev (FL300), 393_icsev (FL240), 506_icsev (FL180), 595_icsev (FL140), 697_icsev (FL100), 812_icsev (FL060)
Wind speed 148_wind (FL450), 197_wind (FL390), 250_wind (FL340), 301_wind (FL300), 344_wind (FL270), 393_wind (FL240), 506_wind (FL180), 595_wind (FL140), 697_wind (FL100)
Cumulonimbus whole_cbhe (horizontal extent), cbtop_hght (top height)

The pressure level in the code is the ICAO Standard Atmosphere pressure of the flight level, rounded to whole hPa (e.g. FL450 = 147.5 hPa → 148). The flight levels, their exact pressure levels and which parameters exist at each are given in PANS-MET Appendix 5, Table A5-3 (0.25° grid) and Table A5-4 (1.25° grid).

/available returns the same lists in valid_params and valid_offsets.

Response

/available:

{
  "current_cycle": "20260317_00",
  "available_cycles": [{"cycle": "20260317_00", "offsets": ["06", "…", "36"], "params": ["148_edr", "…"]}],
  "valid_params": ["148_edr", "…", "cbtop_hght"],
  "valid_offsets": ["06", "09", "…", "36"]
}

/image/{param}: the PNG image.

Errors

Code Meaning
400 Invalid param or offset (the response lists the valid values)
404 No image for this cycle and offset
503 The service is starting up; retry shortly
