A GetCapabilities request returns the service description of the geo server: its layers (with titles, groups and extents), supported coordinate systems, formats and operations. Read it once to find the layer names to use in the other requests.

Use the cached copy first

GetCapabilities is expensive for the geo server: the project has many layers, so building the document can take tens of seconds and puts a heavy load on the server. For this reason the rate limit on GetCapabilities is strict.

Recommended: get the WMS capabilities from Geo Server Capabilities in the AIS PIB API. It is the same XML document, kept ready and refreshed every 10 minutes, and answered at once:

Keep the direct geo server request above only as a fallback — for example when the PIB API answers 503 or cannot be reached. Do not request GetCapabilities from the geo server on every page load; cache the result in your application.
