Rate limits have been set with fair use for all users and the capacity of our servers in mind. In normal use you will not reach them; they only apply to excessive, sustained heavy use.

How limits are counted

  • Limits are counted per access token, not per IP address. Users sharing the same network (e.g. CG-NAT users sharing the same external IP address) do not use up each other's allowance.
  • Every service has its own counter; heavy use of one service does not affect the others.
  • Limits work like a bucket:
    • Bucket: the number of requests you can make without waiting.
    • Refill: how fast used allowance comes back.
    • When the bucket is empty, requests are either held for a moment or slowed down, depending on the service; the bucket refills by itself.

User types

Type Who
Visitor (public) People using ibonav.aero without signing in
User Members signed in to ibonav.aero
Developer Developers using a personal API token (Authorization), and organisations embedding the map on their site

A token obtained with a personal API token always counts as Developer.

Limits per service

AIS PIB API

OPMET, NOTAM, meteorology and the other modules of the AIS PIB API.

Type Per minute Bucket
Visitor 100 20
User 120 30
Developer 600 150

The "is there an update" polls of the live traffic layers (VATSIM, IVAO) are counted separately: 240 per minute for visitors and users (bucket 20), 1,200 per minute for developers (bucket 100).

AIS Charts API

Type Per minute Bucket
Visitor 120 30
User 150 40
Developer 750 200

AIS Jeppesen API

Type Per minute Bucket
Visitor 100 20
User 120 30
Developer 600 150

Tile Server

Base layers and overlays of the Tile Server. When the bucket is empty the map is slowed down, not cut off.

Type Bucket (no waiting) Speed when empty Per hour without slowdown (approx.)
Visitor 22,500 tiles 6 tiles per second 44,000 tiles
User 30,000 tiles 8 tiles per second 59,000 tiles
Developer 150,000 tiles 40 tiles per second 294,000 tiles

Geo Server

Map queries and georeferenced charts (WMS/WFS) of the Geo Server. When the bucket is empty requests are slowed down, not cut off.

Type Bucket (no waiting) Speed when empty
Visitor 2,250 2 per second
User 3,000 3 per second
Developer 15,000 15 per second

The service description request (GetCapabilities) has its own, stricter limit: 1 per minute for visitors and users (bucket 2–3), 5 per minute for developers (bucket 15). This information rarely changes; fetch it once and keep it.

What happens at the limit

  • The server answers HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests) with a Retry-After header saying after how many seconds you may try again (usually 2 seconds; 60 seconds for the service description request).
  • ibonav.aero and the Interactive Map handle this themselves: the request is retried automatically after a short wait.
  • For tiles and Geo Server queries, requests are slowed down instead of refused.

Tips for developers

  • On a 429, wait the number of seconds in Retry-After before trying again; do not retry immediately and repeatedly.
  • Reuse the 1-hour access token you get with your personal API token until it expires. Do not request a new token for every call; getting new tokens is limited per hour as well.
  • Cache data that rarely changes (service descriptions, lists).
  • Query data at intervals that match how often it is updated, instead of asking for the same data again and again.

Kişisel API anahtarıyla alınan token her zaman Geliştirici sayılır.

Hizmet başına sınırlar

AIS PIB API

AIS Charts API

Tür Dakikada Kova

Tile Server

Tile Server'ın altlık haritaları ve katmanları. Kova boşaldığında harita kesilmez, yavaşlar.

Sınıra ulaşınca ne olur?

  • Sunucu HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests) yanıtı ve Retry-After başlığı döndürür.
