Volcano observatory notices for aviation (VONA) of the last 30 days: the latest notice of each volcano, all notices, and point/area layers of the volcano positions. Data is refreshed every 5 minutes.
A VONA is issued by a State volcano observatory (SVO); it is a different message from the volcanic ash advisory of a VAAC (VA Advisory). PANS-MET gives a VONA no validity period: it describes the volcano until the next VONA, and it is updated at least every 24 hours while the colour code stays RED, every 7 days at ORANGE and twice a month at YELLOW (6.1.8). That is why notices of the last 30 days are kept. The notice format is that of PANS-MET Table A7-1. To decode a notice, pass its raw text to VONA (ICAO).
Endpoints
| Endpoint | Description |
|---|---|
GET /opmet-vona/recent |
Latest VONA of each volcano within the last 30 days (shown on the map layer) |
GET /opmet-vona/last30d |
All VONAs issued within the last 30 days, newest first |
GET /opmet-vona/geojson/points |
Volcano positions of /recent (Point FeatureCollection) |
GET /opmet-vona/geojson/extent |
Notices of /recent whose position is a list of coordinates (Polygon FeatureCollection) |
GET /opmet-vona/latest-snapshot |
Time of the newest data, {"snapshot": "YYYYMMDD_HHMM"} or null |
For a map layer, poll /latest-snapshot and request the GeoJSON only when the value changes.
Parameters

Use only this data source: ingv or usgs; an unknown id returns 400 |
The data sources are combined; each notice keeps its own source.

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
raw |
Notice text in the Table A7-1 format, one heading per line |
time / epoch |
Time the notice was issued (UTC, YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS / Unix seconds) |
source |
Name of the data source |
GeoJSON feature properties: svo (name of the SVO), notice_number, current_colour_code (GREEN, YELLOW, ORANGE, RED, UNASSIGNED, NIL or null), time, source, raw; area features also carry phase. These values are taken from the decoded notice; a value that does not follow the template is null.
Converted notices
Some data sources do not publish VONAs in the PANS-MET format; their notices are converted to the Table A7-1 template and marked (Converted) in source. Values are written as published: a value that does not follow the template stays as it is and the decoder lists it under Undecodable elements. Source fields that have no template element are added to RMK. This is expected and shows exactly what the observatory published.
