The geo server is an OGC Web Map Tile Service (WMTS 1.0.0): it serves the layers as fixed, pre-defined map tiles instead of images of any size.

Use the Tile Server for map display
Every WMTS request is rendered by the geo server at the time of the request: the layers are drawn from the data each time, nothing is cached. This is slow, especially for large areas or many layers, and loads the server.
Recommended: to display the map, use the cached tiles of the Tile Server (available layers: Layer Lists). They are rendered in advance and served from the cache, so they load fast. Use the geo server WMTS only for what the tiles cannot give you — e.g. a layer or tile matrix set that the Tile Server does not offer.
What you can do with it:
- Show the aeronautical map as tiles in web and mobile map libraries that work with tile grids.
- Use standard tile grids: tiles of fixed size on fixed zoom levels, which browsers can cache like any other image.
Map symbology: the symbols of the aeronautical layers are explained in the ibonav.aero User Guide.
The available layers, tile matrix sets and formats are listed in the WMTS GetCapabilities document.
