About the reference documents: Related Documents and Resources

Returns the meteorological report format (for METAR/SPECI and TAF) used at an aerodrome, by its ICAO location indicator. Use the value to choose the default decoding method.

METAR/SPECI and TAF are not written the same way everywhere. Some groups that look the same are coded differently:

  • U.S. and Canada (FAA practice): visibility is in statute miles, the altimeter setting is in inches of mercury (A2992), and there is a remarks section with its own codes.
  • Some States: some ICAO provisions that were removed on 4 November 2021, such as the state of the runway group, are still used.

The same report decoded with the wrong rules gives wrong values or undecodable groups.

Call this endpoint with the aerodrome's location indicator before decoding to pick the right decoder and options automatically — for example, when a user enters any aerodrome in an app or when a mixed list of reports from many countries is decoded. The result is a default chosen from the location indicator prefix; if you know a station reports differently, you can choose another decoder yourself.
