The geo server is an OGC Web Feature Service (WFS 1.1.0): it returns the aeronautical data itself — points, lines and polygons with all their attributes — instead of a picture.

What you can do with it:

  • Query features by area (BBOX or an ogc:Filter with Intersects) — e.g. the airspaces or navaids in the map view.
  • Search by attribute with OGC filters (PropertyIsEqualTo, PropertyIsLike, And / Or) — e.g. a fix by name, an aerodrome by ICAO location indicator.
  • Get only what you need: limit the attributes with PROPERTYNAME (leaving out the geometry makes the answer much smaller) and the number of features with MAXFEATURES.
  • Draw your own way: get GeoJSON (OUTPUTFORMAT=application/json) and style it in your application, with the same symbols as the WMS map (see Symbol of a feature).

Map symbology: the symbols of the aeronautical layers are explained in the ibonav.aero User Guide.

Long filters should be sent with POST (very long GET URLs are refused). The ibonav.aero map uses WFS this way for clicking on features and for its search bar.

Feature type names come from the GetCapabilities document.

Symbol of a feature

WFS returns the features without their symbols. To find the symbol the WMS map uses for a queried point feature, use Geo Server Symbology in the AIS PIB API: send the layer name (the WFS feature type) and the feature's attributes to /qgis-symbol/resolve, get the SVG file name, then the SVG itself from /qgis-symbol/svg/{filename}. Only point layers drawn with SVG symbols are covered.
