The geo server is an OGC Web Map Service (WMS 1.3.0): it draws the aeronautical layers as map images for any area, size and coordinate system you request.

Use the Tile Server for map display
Every WMS request is rendered by the geo server at the time of the request: the layers are drawn from the data each time, nothing is cached. This is slow, especially for large areas or many layers, and loads the server.
Recommended: to display the map, use the cached tiles of the Tile Server (available layers: Layer Lists). They are rendered in advance and served from the cache, so they load fast. Use the geo server WMS only for what the tiles cannot give you — e.g. GetFeatureInfo, GetLegendGraphic, or a layer combination or coordinate system that the Tile Server does not offer.
What you can do with it:
- Show the aeronautical map in a web or desktop map (OpenLayers, Leaflet, QGIS, …) as image layers, styled exactly like the ibonav.aero map (
GetMap). - Combine layers: request one layer or a group (e.g. all airspaces) in one image, over your own base map.
- Identify features under a click with
GetFeatureInfo. - Show legends with
GetLegendGraphic.
Map symbology: the symbols of the aeronautical layers are explained in the ibonav.aero User Guide.
Layer and group names come from the GetCapabilities document. For tiled access see WMTS; for the feature data itself see WFS.
